Harper's Birthday

Finally, the countdown was over and Harper's birthday arrived. He will always remember his eighth birthday for the fact it was in Vietnam and at Rosie and Huw's place. Just being here was special.

Harper woke us early and so we opened a few cards, including a special one from Grandma. Lisa organised a 'gift voucher' (a kind of IOU) to cover off the things we wanted to give him but couldn't necessarily obtain in Vietnam. There were some Skylander, Lego and other things he was really hoping for. So apart from what we can download, there will be some happy presents for him to look forward to when he gets home.

We both went for a swim with him along the beach as this has become his little ritual.  The sea was glassy.  Harper described it as being like apple juice it was so clear. By the time we went up the beach and back, it was closer to five swims.

After breakfast, Huw had arranged to take Harper for a ride on his motorbike as a special birthday treat.  He loved it! They wound their way through the narrow lanes of the village, people reaching out to touch Harper as he went past, and then made their way up to the highway for a short circuit.  Harper declared it his best experience ever!

Rosie had also organised a great surprise for Harper - a birthday cake celebration with some kids from the village.   The kids were absolutely gorgeous and each bought along a little present.  Some of the presents came for a local disabilities' workshop.  Harper also got a friendship bracelet to add to his growing collection and a pendant with 'H' on it.  The present that really took Harper's fancy was a pre-loved soft toy in the form of a cow.  The birthday cake was superb and everyone sang Happy Birthday.  Harper then spent some time playing Lego with a local boy and afterwards he proudly announced he had made his first Vietnamese friend.

Our other big activity for the day was a special dinner at the Life Resort with Rosie and Huw for more birthday celebrations.  It also served as a bit of a night off for them and a chance to really enjoy each other's company.  We ended up playing charades at Harper's instigation over dinner.  It was quite hilarious, not only because Harper is a very good actor but we all got into it.  Heavens knows what the other tables thought.

We finished dinner with another yummy birthday cake and Harper happy with his special day in Vietnam.
